Product Details
- Above Elm in Japan — In the Japanese deciduous canon, Zelkova ranks above Elm. Western collectors tend to flip the order. We didn't.
- Natural broom form, near collection-ready — The broom is a classified style in Japanese bonsai: symmetrical canopy, fine ramification, the silhouette of a mature tree in miniature. Other deciduous species require years of corrective wiring to suggest it. Zelkova arrives there on its own. At this size, primary branch structure is set — the next pruning cycle puts the tree within reach of show readiness.
- Four seasons of interest — Fresh spring flush. Long summer shoots ready for pruning. Fall color — roughly 10% of our Zelkovas turn red rather than the expected yellow. Late-fall leaf strip reveals a bare silhouette that earns indoor display through winter dormancy. Most deciduous bonsai disappear in winter. Zelkova doesn't.
- Rapid structural development without sacrifice — Trunks and primary branches build caliper faster than nearly any deciduous bonsai of consequence. Smooth gray bark splits with age to reveal orange-brown inner bark — a transformation few common species offer. A tree that takes thirty years in another species reaches refinement in ten.
- From the 2026 Pescadero batch — Heavy December rain followed by three months of unseasonable warmth produced a year of unusual vigor at our nursery. We did not plan for it. These trees are the result, and the batch is not repeatable.
- Specs — Approximately 2" trunk caliper, set in a 14" YiXing clay pot with a patent-pending water-retaining design for easy care. Fewer made at this size; greater caliper, more advanced ramification, ready for serious training.
