Chinese Lacebark Elm

Scientific name: Ulmus Parvifolia

Origin: Throughout China

Distinguishing feature: Hardy tree, surviving flood and drought in China. Interesting Lace bark, leaf reduces with ramification, and is nearly evergreen in mild climate.

Style: Triple trunk

History: Bought from the private collection of the curator of the Huntington Library in 2001.

Started as cutting and was grown in the garden for 15-20 years.

I transplanted it into  a 20 gallon nursery can and did not pay attention to this tree thinking it is too cluttered. It looks more proportional when I titled it in 2018 and started training it in a deep oval pot.

The tree was moved to this shallow pot in 2021 using my standard current soil mix using equal parts of sandy loam, perlite, and peat The tree is now growing rapidly.

Triple trunk style with interesting lace bark
