Product Details

Why the Chinese Lacebark Elm:

  • The most forgiving classic bonsai species — it buds back even from old wood, so pruning mistakes literally grow out
  • Fast, visible feedback — prune it and vigorous new shoots appear within weeks; you see your training work in a single season
  • Naturally small, notched leaves and fine twigging — it looks like a "real bonsai" earlier than almost any species
  • Its famous lacebark — mottled, flaking bark that develops rich character as the trunk ages
  • Fall foliage — unlike ordinary Chinese elms, which turn yellow in the fall, most of our trees flush red under the right growing conditions
  • Hardy — semi-evergreen in mild climates, cold-hardy with simple protection nearly everywhere else, and naturally resistant to Dutch elm disease

What to expect: Ships in a one-gallon nursery pot filled with our proprietary bonsai soil mix. Trunk at least ¾" wide at the base, with ample ramification to give you a head start. Formal upright style — each tree distinctively natural. Scientific name: Ulmus parvifolia.

Who It's For

Anyone who wants to plant and shape their first bonsai themselves. These trees are trained from the start to become a specimen bonsai, without tangled roots — so the hard part is already done. Prefer it finished, planted, and pruned by us?

Common Questions

  • Can I keep this bonsai indoors? It tolerates a bright, cool room better than any classic species — but we'll be straight with you: the patio is its home.
  • What if I forget to water it? Our soil holds moisture longer than a traditional shallow-pot setup — miss a morning or take a weekend trip and the tree will hold. It widens your margin; it doesn't replace watering.
  • Is bonsai a lot of work? Minutes a day. Check the soil, water when the top begins to dry, trim when growth gets shaggy. That is the whole ritual — and it is the best part.
  • What happens in the first 30 days? Acclimation. Some leaf drop after shipping is normal — place it, water it, let it settle before making any changes.
  • Anything special about this species? It's semi-evergreen — in mild climates it may hold leaves most of the winter; in colder ones, fall leaf drop is the tree settling in for dormancy, not giving up. Cold-hardy with simple protection nearly everywhere.
  • Prefer it finished for you? The same field-trained tree, planted and pruned by us in our water-retaining Melmac pot, ready for the patio the day the box opens: Chinese Lacebark Elm Starter Bonsai.

What "Pre-Bonsai" Means

Trees that can be easily made into a nice bonsai by anyone. We offer well-developed trees, trained from the start to become a specimen bonsai without tangled roots. Pre-bonsai are a more affordable entry point for beginners and a rewarding project for seasoned hobbyists — excellent for training, experimentation, and long-term development.

Two good paths from here. Plant it in a bonsai pot now, using the soil it arrives in (a BH pot comes with root-pruning mesh), and you'll have a young bonsai of your own. Or keep it in the nursery pot for a few months to speed up its growth first — you'll have a more mature-looking tree sooner.

Want the whole project in one box? The DIY Bonsai Kit pairs this tree with a hand-made Yixing ceramic pot, root-pruning screen, and our handcrafted clippers — and saves you 10% on every piece.
