Pre-Bonsai:

  • Each comes in a one-gallon nursery pot filled with our proprietary soil mix blended specifically for bonsai potting.

Ceramic Bonsai Pots:

  • Each is hand-made, using a unique purple clay found only in the Yixing region of China.
  • This clay is known for its fine grain and porous nature, and it is prized for its ability to retain moisture and allow for good air circulation, creating optimal conditions for bonsai tree growth.
  • Every bonsai pot will come with a sheet of root-pruning screen that you can cut down to fit your pot.

Bonsai Clippers:

  • Japanese-inspired design with ultra-sharp stainless steel blades for clean, accurate snips.
  • Ergonomic, spring-loaded grip reduces hand fatigue during long trimming sessions.
  • Durable carbon steel construction, powder-coated for longevity and rust resistance.
  • Perfect for bonsai, herbs, succulents, and floral work — great for indoor or outdoor use.
  • Note: Since the branches and leaves of trees and flowers have acidic or alkaline properties, it is important to clean and dry your shears after each use to prevent them from rusting.

Common Questions

What comes in the kit? A field-trained pre-bonsai, a hand-cast Yixing ceramic pot with a root-pruning screen, and a pair of our clippers. You choose each of the three.

Do I have to pot it myself? Yes — that is the point, and it takes about twenty minutes. Use the soil the tree arrives in, seat it on the screen, water it in. Our care library walks through it step by step.

How much does buying together actually save? Ten percent off every piece, applied automatically at checkout. The saving grows with the pot you choose, so a larger ceramic saves you more than the entry pairing does.

Can I pick any tree with any pot? Any combination we have in stock. Some pairings are easier on the eye than others — a wide oval flatters a spreading elm, a deeper rectangle suits an upright trunk — but nothing is off limits.

I have never done this before. Is this the wrong place to start? It is the right place. Pre-bonsai are grown to be forgiving: the roots are settled, the trunk line is chosen, and the species we offer bud back readily from a bad cut. You are finishing a tree, not rescuing one.

Prefer it already planted? The Starter Bonsai line is the same field-trained stock, potted and pruned by us in our water-retaining Melmac pot, ready the day it arrives.

Why Build It Yourself?

A finished bonsai is somebody else’s choices already made — which tree, which pot, which proportion. The kit hands those choices back to you, at the point where they still change what the tree becomes.

Ten percent comes off every piece when they ship together, so this is the least expensive way into a properly trained tree rather than a seedling. Choose the species you actually want. Choose the Yixing pot to put it in — series, shape, size. Choose the clippers you’ll keep using for years. Nothing here is a fixed bundle; you assemble it.
