The only requirement for longevity is to never let the root ball dry out! Water your bonsai daily, and even more on hot days. You won’t “drown” your bonsai as long as it does not sit in rancid water. Evaporation allows air to reach the root ball, promoting healthy growth.

Place your bonsai in full sun or partial shade. Photolysis keeps bonsai healthy, strong, and growing. You can keep your bonsai indoors for one to two weeks at a time. Be sure to place it next to an open window or under a bright grow light to maintain healthy growth.

Houseplant fertilizers, slow-release lawn food, and chicken manure pellets are all suitable; just use less than the recommended dosage to avoid over-fertilizing.

Pruning your bonsai provides a moment of focus and concentration, offering benefits not unlike meditation. Be bold when you prune, as this is what gives your bonsai its drama. You can never make a mistake pruning, as new growth will always provide further design opportunities.
